Who we are
This-a-Way Records was created in 1996 by Mistina La Fave and David Frederickson as a way to legitimize their independent releases as The Prids. DIY was a way of life for serious indie bands in the 90s. Buy a 4-track. Record your albums yourself. Make your own tapes. Book your own tours. If you put in the time and effort, you could see progress as an independent band. Being a DIY band in the 90s was no small feat, but your efforts could really pay off if you had the diligence.
Enter the internet age. So much has changed. In some aspects it’s easier than ever to be DIY, and for that reason the world has a million more bands. Wanna book a show? Send an email! Wanna put out an album? Upload it to Bandcamp! Now we exist in an oversaturated music universe where promoting your art is something you need a business to do for you, to even glean a moment of attention. Great bands so easily get lost in this sea of oversaturation.
And with that came the new concept for This-a-Way: taking a 90s DIY model and transforming it for a new era. A collective of friends who work together to promote one another’s creative projects. We’re a clique, a scene, a movement. We pool our resources as graphic designers, booking agents, recording engineers, writers, publicists, filmmakers- to further each other’s musical endeavors often with little to no budget. Just lots of hard work. We each retain the rights to our music, and share in promoting what we believe in for the love of it, not for profit. The musical landscape has changed, but our independent sensibilities have not.
